environmental stewardship, our commitment to safety, our dedication to
our communities, and smart long-term investments to maintain the
reliable service our customers expect.
In 2012 we:
Reduced our environmental impact
- Reduced our greenhouse-gas emissions bringing our total reduction to 45 percent from 2005 baseline
- Recycled more than 90 percent of non-hazardous waste materials generated
- Reduced SF emissions 91 percent since 1999, and committed to an additional 25-percent reduction from current levels
- Participated in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative program review, and advocated for a cost-containment mechanism to keep costs low for our customers
Strengthened our business
- Invested $1.2 billion in electrical-system enhancements with a plan to invest $1 billion more in future upgrades to improve our resiliency
- Tripled portfolio of solar generation assets, becoming the fifth largest solar producer in North America
- Experienced 10-percent growth in customer demand response program enrollment from 2011
- Worked with customers to complete 800 conversions from heavy fuel to natural gas in the Con Edison of New York and Orange and Rockland territories
Improved relationships with our stakeholders
- Achieved record low OSHA incidence rates at our regulated utilities
- Received 2012 Emergency Recovery Award for response to Superstorm Sandy when we restored service to over 1.4 million customers
- Donated more than 4,500 volunteer hours across New York City and Westchester County
- Purchased more than $300 million in goods and services from minority- and women-owned businesses
